Trevor Noah Satirizes U.S. Healthcare After Emergency Appendectomy
Daily Show host Trevor Noah missed Wednesday’s show when he had to undergo an emergency appendectomy for a perforated appendix, but the South-African comedian returned with a bang on Thursday. And by “bang,” I mean the fake news show anchor used the opportunity to riff on the U.S. healthcare system.
“A lot of people asked me, ‘Hey Trevor, what’s it going to be like commenting on America if you’re not from America?’ And I was like, ‘Well I’m going to have to experience America,'” Noah joked. “What better way than enjoying America’s healthcare system?”
“It was an interesting experience going to an emergency room, I’m not going to lie. Although I don’t know if emergency room is the right term because they make you wait. I feel like there should be two rooms: a room for emergencies, and a room for people who can fill out forms.”

Despite the jokes, Noah was thankful for the surgeons and hospital staff who helped him throughout the process. Even the one nurse who pestered him again and again about filling out his forms — intense pain to the contrary. While asking The Daily Show host about whether or not he had insurance, he looked at him and said: “You know what? I’ve seen the billboards. You’re fine. You can pay for it.”
The opening segment concluded with a bit about The Daily Show correspondents visiting Noah in the hospital. Desi Lydic and Jordan Klepper individually plotted for the show’s Noah-less future, Ronny Chieng had flashbacks from when his father left him, and Roy Wood Jr. demanded the host recover so that he didn’t “give this show back to white people.”
