Trey Gowdy: Judge Merchan and DA Bragg ‘Did More to Help Get Trump Re-Elected’ Than Any Republican Strategist

Fox News contributor Trey Gowdy credited Judge Juan Merchan and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for doing “more to help get Donald Trump re-elected” than any Republican strategist working on the 2024 campaign.

On Friday morning, Merchan sentenced the president-elect to an unconditional discharge for his conviction on falsification of business records charges. He is officially a convicted felon, but Trump will face no jail time or probation for the 34 felonies he was charged with in the hush money case brought against him over his payments to Stormy Daniels to cover up an alleged affair.

Reacting to the news of Trump’s light sentence, Gowdy told Dana Perino that “lawfare” used by New York Democrats helped get Trump elected back in November, at the end of a campaign where Trump saw his support surge in the wake of the cases brought against him.

PERINO: You think about the Democrats who have basically not even found their footing since their loss in November. Part of their calculation was that President Trump would be a convicted felon, therefore America would never reelect him and that he would be tarnished forever and you would never see him again. Obviously, that did not happen. The very opposite happened. And so their calculation politically was so off. And it seems to me that we’re watching liberalism collapse in governments across the world. And I would even say the state government of California right now, you see this their policies did not work. The approach of lawfare did not work, and now they are in the wilderness.

GOWDY: I would wholeheartedly agree. Well, the question is now in New York, is it going to hurt Alvin Bragg? I don’t think so. But look at progressive prosecutors in California. They’re being recalled right and left. So I don’t know that Alvin Bragg learned any lessons. But but the rest of Democrats should, at least speaking of the wilderness, want to be in the wilderness for the next 40 years. Alvin Bragg and Juan Merchan did more to help get Donald Trump re-elected, popular vote and electoral College, than any Republican strategist I can think of.
