Trump Cites Putin of All People to Back Up Voter Fraud Claims: ‘He Said Your Election Was Rigged’

President Donald Trump cited Russian President Vladimir Putin as an authority on the 2020 U.S. presidential election and false claims of voter fraud.

Russia has held rigged elections throughout Putin’s quarter-century reign as Russia’s dictator.

Trump has long claimed that the contest was rigged against him. After losing in 2020, he spent two months trying to overturn the results and ultimately inspired a deadly riot at the Capitol. He repeated those claims in an interview on Fox News with Sean Hannity on Friday, shortly after meeting with Putin in Alaska to discuss a potential end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Hannity noted that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he managed to broker an end to the conflict.

Trump responded that he appreciated the words, much to the dismay of Hannity, who tried to get the president to criticize her. The president declined and pivoted to his meeting with Putin, who, Trump said, explained why the 2020 election was “rigged.”

“Vladimir Putin said something, one of the most interesting things,” Trump said. “He said, ‘Your election was rigged because you have mail-in voting.’ He said, ‘Mail-in voting every election. He said, ‘No country has mail-in voting. It’s impossible to have mail-in voting and have honest elections.’ And he said that to me. It was very interesting because we talked about 2020. He said, ‘You won that election by so much,’ and that’s how he got it. He said, ‘If you would’ve won, we wouldn’t have had a war.”

The president, who called Putin “a smart guy” in his remarks, went on to allege that when it comes to mail-in voting, “Some people get seven ballots.”

“I would love to see election reform,” Hannity replied.
