Trump Claims Coal Miners Would Be ‘Unhappy’ With Lavish Lifestyles Because ‘They Want to Mine Coal’

President Donald Trump hosted a group of coal miners for a signing ceremony at the White House, where he extolled “clean, beautiful coal.”

On Tuesday, the president signed executive orders intended to help the nation’s flagging coal industry. That includes ordering the secretary of Energy to ascertain whether coal is a “critical mineral” in steel production and directing the secretary of the Interior to end a ban on coal leasing on federal property. Trump slammed his predecessor and alleged that former President Joe Biden tried to destroy the coal industry.

“For four long years Joe Biden and congressional Democrats tried to abolish the American coal industry,” he said. They did everything in their power while he was awake, which wasn’t much.”

For good measure, Trump went on to criticize Hillary Clinton, alleging that she wanted coal miners to transition to other industries such as manufacturing or computer technology.

“She was talking about how bad coal was and they were gonna teach coal miners how to make widgets and gadgets and technology,” he said, adding that coal miners and luxury living are incompatible because coal miners only want to mine coal.

“They wanna mine,” he continued. “One thing I learned about the coal miners is that’s they wanna do.” You give them a penthouse on Fifth Avenue and a different kind of a job, and they’d be unhappy. They want to mine coal. That’s what they love to do.
