Trump Reportedly Threw Starburst At Angela Merkel During G-7: ‘Don’t Say I Never Gave You Anything’

If you can’t beat them, throw delicious chewy candy at ’em!

According to CBS Senior Global Affairs Contributor Ian Bremmer, President Donald Trump, who was particularly petulant throughout the G7 Summit, threw a couple of Starburst candies on the table in front of German Chancellor Angela Merkel after begrudgingly agreeing to sign a communiqué committing to a “rules-based international order.”

“The advisers had been working on it until 3:00 that morning, straight through the night, including [Economic Advisor Larry] Kudlow from the United States, and Trump was sitting there with his arms crossed, clearly not liking the fact that he felt like they were ganging up on him,” Bremmer explained. “He eventually agreed. He said, okay, he’ll sign it. At that point, he stood up, he put his hand in his pocket, his suit jacket pocket, and he took two Starburst candies out, threw them on the table, and said to Merkel, ‘Here, Angela. Don’t say I never give you anything.'”

“So President Trump had a Starburst outburst?” Norah O’Donnell quipped, to laughter from the control room.

“His personal relationship with Merkel is deeply broken,” Bremmer said after a chuckle. “The leaders obviously do not respect each other.”

Gayle King asked if Trump could’ve possibly given Merkel the candies in jest, and Bremmer answered in the negative.

“One thing is when he’s told to do things he doesn’t want to do, he doesn’t respond easily,” he said.
