Trump Reveals ‘A Couple of People From Fox’ Helped Write His Jokes for Al Smith Dinner: ‘I Shouldn’t Say That’

Former President and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump revealed that “a couple of people from Fox [News]” helped write his jokes for the Al Smith Dinner in New York City during a Friday morning appearance on Fox & Friends.

On Thursday night, Trump delivered a monologue at the annual charitable even, which is almost always attended by the two major parties’ standard bearers during presidential election years.

On Friday, host Steve Doocy noted that “a lot of Democrats” often turn to Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show staffers for assistance in writing their speeches for comical events like the Al Smith or White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

“Your material is real funny, who wrote it?” asked Doocy.

“Well, I’ve had a lot of people helping, a lot of people. A couple of people from Fox, actually — I shouldn’t say that, but they wrote some jokes, and for the most part, I didn’t like any of them, right?” replied Trump to laughs.

While Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a brief video message to attendees on Thursday, Trump’s live routine included shots and jokes about her (“She’s in Michigan receiving communion from Gretchen Whitmer“) and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (“Unfortunately, Governor Walz isn’t here himself. But don’t worry, he’ll say that he was”).

It is not uncommon for politicians to receive help from members of the press and comedians in writing their material for such events. A Daily Show writer helped President Barack Obama prepare for the White House Correspondents Dinner in 2011 and Jon Meacham moonlighted as a speechwriter for Joe Biden during his 2020 presidential campaign while also serving as an MSNBC contributor.
