Trump Voter Tells CNN He Doesn’t Trust Elon Musk: ‘Can You Believe Any of That Crap?’

Voters across the country have expressed varying degrees of skepticism about the role GOP megadonor Elon Musk is playing in President Donald Trump’s administration. Musk, who leads the “Department of Government Efficiency,” has fired scores of federal employees – sometimes in slapdash fashion – and has made numerous false or baseless claims about alleged government waste and fraud “DOGE” has uncovered.

In one instance, Musk and Trump have dubiously claimed that millions of dead people are receiving checks from the Social Security Administration. The head of the agency resigned last week after refusing to allow Musk access to “sensitive files.”

CNN dispatched Chief National Correspondent John King to rural Colorado to check in with Trump voters one month into the administration. One, David Hayes, said he does not believe Tesla CEO’s claims.

“I don’t know how many people he’s fired,” Hayes said. “And you know, Musk keeps saying, ‘Well, I found $1 billion of waste here. And Social Security, there’s hundreds and hundreds of people that are collecting it that are between 100 years old and 150.’ Can you believe any of that crap? He can’t substantiate it. You can’t believe it. So that’s a trust issue.”

King described Hayes, a rancher, as “a three-time Trump voter who calls the president unfocused and arrogant.”

“But if you had a do-over tomorrow and you had to pick again between Trump and Harris, what would you do?” King asked.

“I would still do Trump,” Hayes replied.

Musk’s role in the administration has come under scrutiny as the impact of his personnel and spending decisions has started to be felt across the country. Republican lawmakers in even deep-red districts have gotten earfuls from angry constituents concerned about Musk and “DOGE.”
