VICE Is Finally Getting Its Own 24-Hour Cable Channel Called ‘Viceland’
Countless parodies have trolled founder Shane Smith‘s new media empite, VICE, but the new media organization is about to expand further into the cable market with its own 24-hour news channel.
In a joint statement by VICE and A&E on Tuesday, Huffington Post reports that “Viceland” was announced for February 2016. The new cable channel would replace A&E’s H2, and will reach around 70 million homes when it goes active.
Academy Award-winning writer and director Spike Jonze, whose films include Her, Where the Wild Things Are and Being John Malkovich, is slated to oversee programming development of the new cable channel. Jonze, who described the venture as more than a “collection of shows,” has collaborated with VICE before.
“Our mission with the channel is not that different from what our mission is as a company: it’s us trying to understand the world we live in by producing pieces about things we’re curious about, or confused about, or that we think are funny,” the writer/director said in a statement. “And if it doesn’t have a strong point of view then it shouldn’t be on this channel.”
The new channel will probably include Marc Maron‘s confirmed interview show, Portraits with Marc Maron. Meanwhile, the media company’s news magazine program on HBO, VICE, will continue through 2018 as reported in a previous statement.
