Wallace Grills McDonough: Shouldn’t Obama ‘Scale Back Agenda’ after Midterms?
Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace challenged White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough Sunday morning to explain why President Barack Obama hadn’t moderated his agenda following November’s midterm losses.
“During the campaign the president said the midterms were going to be a referendum on his agenda,” Wallace said. “Despite the fact that Republicans gained nine seats and took control of the Senate, and gained 13 seats in the House, the president didn’t acknowledge that Republicans won the midterm, or scale back any of his agenda to reach out to Republicans.”
When McDonough began listing Obama’s post-midterm accomplishes, including Cuba and a climate deal with China, Wallace accused him of dodging the question.
“The president famously said in 2009 to Eric Cantor, ‘Elections have consequences. I won,'” Wallace said. “Well guess what: in November the Republicans won. What are the consequences? Doesn’t the president need to scale back his agenda to work with Republicans?”
McDonough listed areas where the two sides could come together, but then added, “He is not going to say that we should trim back his agenda working for middle class families. He’s not.”
