WATCH: Diana Nyad Speaks After Completing Cuba to Florida Swim (UPDATED)

 

On her fifth attempt, dating all the way back to 1978, 64-year-old Diana Nyad completed her record-setting 110-mile swim from Havana, Cuba to Miami, Florida Monday. Nyad came ashore just before 2pm ET, nearly 53 hours after she began her swim Saturday morning. She spoke to the press shortly after becoming the first person to successfully swim that distance without the use of a shark cage.


Nyad had three things to tell her supporters:

“We should never, ever give up.”

“You’re never too old to chase a dream.”

“It may look like a solo effort but it took a team.”

President Obama offered his congratulation to Nyad on Twitter:
