WATCH: Massive Fireball Lights Up LA Sky as Blaze Rips Through Chevron Oil Refinery

Fire tore through Chevron’s vast oil refinery complex in El Segundo on Thursday night, lighting up the skies south of Los Angeles International Airport as residents were told to shelter in place.

Viral footage from dashcams and doorbell cams show the moment of the initial roaring explosion and fireball:

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, confused local residents described the scene in apocalyptic terms as heavy smoke billowed from the blaze.

“I thought we got nuked or something,” said Mark Rogers, who had been playing in an adult soccer league game six miles away.

“This was 300-foot flames,” Kevin Mohr told the outlet as he watched from Manhattan Beach. “I didn’t know if a plane crashed or there was an earthquake or both.”

The fire was described as “isolated” within the massive facility by Chevron.

“All refinery personnel and contractors have been accounted for and there are no injuries,” said Allison Cook, a company spokesperson.

Emergency responders, including refinery firefighters and units from El Segundo and Manhattan Beach, worked through the night to contain the flames. While no evacuation orders were issued, a three-hour shelter-in-place alert was sent to parts of nearby Manhattan Beach, instructing residents to “bring all people and pets indoors.”

Chevron said monitoring systems had detected “no exceedances” of toxic emissions at the facility’s fence line.
