‘We Can Be Respected’: Sarah McBride Becomes First Openly Trans Convention Speaker at DNC
Sarah McBride, the national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, spoke to the DNC as the first openly transgender American to address a national political convention.
McBride spoke of witnessing history while interning at the White House and how the fight for full equality needs to continue.
“Will we be a nation,” she asked, “where there’s only one way to love, only one way to look, and only one way to live? Or will we be a nation where everyone has the freedom to live openly and equally?”
McBride got emotional as she talked about marrying Andrew Cray days before he died of cancer two years ago. She said, “His passing taught me that every day matters when it comes to making a world where every person can live their life to the fullest.”
She reminded everyone that LGBT Americans are still “targeted by hate that still lives in hearts and laws,” but with Hillary Clinton as president, “Tomorrow we can be respected and protected.”
