‘Who’s Confessing to Whom?’ Fox Hosts Joke Trump and Zelensky Sit-Down at Pope’s Funeral Looked Like Face-to-Face Catholic Confession

An image of President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaking privately at the funeral for Pope Francis went viral over the weekend, including on Fox & Friends Weekend on Saturday morning.

Trump and Zelenskyy having an apparent heart-to-heart pulled a lot of media attention, considering how things shook out at their last face-to-face encounter, and in addition to widespread social media comments and speculation, cable news picked up and ran with the shot as a defining moment.

Hosts Charlie Hurt, Rachel Campos-Duffy, and Dana Perino were discussing the funeral and the politics around it on Saturday, and Hurt mentioned the “iconic image” of the meet-up.

Campos-Duffy humorously noted that, amid the trappings of Catholicism and the situation at large, the pic evoked a certain imagery.

“You know what that looks like by the way?” she said. “That looks like a face-to-face confession.”

As they chuckled about that thought, Hurt said, “who’s confessing to whom?”

“I don’t like face-to-face confession, but it happens. I don’t like it. I like the screen,” Campos-Duffy continued. “But that looks like a confession.”

Perino then pointed out how significant it is the two leaders could have that “moment of peace” to privately communicate “at a time when people are being very reflective, not just maybe for their own lives, but also the peace of the world.”

“There’s a lot of responsibility on their two shoulders,” she said. “And I love that image and hope that it portends something positive.”

HURT: One of the great things about that I love about this is watching all these world leaders come from all over the world. Here you have that iconic images of President Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky meeting in, before the funeral, in the church there.

CAMPOS-DUFFY: And you know what that looks like by the way that looks like a face-to-face confession.

HURT: Who’s confessing to whom?

CAMPOS-DUFFY: I don’t like face-to-face confession, but it happens. I don’t like it. I like the screen. But that looks like a confession.

PERINO: Also, you think about the last time that they saw each other, right, and that … Also talk about human failings right. Where there wasn’t a grace extended to everybody from both sides and so, what I what I like about this is that these are the two leaders alone. But what it does remind you too is that remember – I remember when President Bush said I’m the decider the decider in chief, right.

These are that deciders in chiefs for their nations and it matters what the two of them being able to communicate directly in that moment of peace at a time when people are being very reflective, not just maybe for their own lives, but also the peace of the world.

There’s a lot of responsibility on their two shoulders. And I love that image and hope that it portends something positive.
