Why Did Joe Biden Call Republicans the ‘Neanderthal Crowd?’

Speaking at an event at the Naval Observatory in Washington D.C., Vice President Joe Biden tore into House Republicans for refusing to pass an updated version of the Violence Against Women Act. He warned the audience that he was about to “say something outrageous” before he called the Congressional Republicans the “Neanderthal crowd” for not passing a Senate version of the bill.

“I’m going to say something outrageous,” Biden said. “I think I understand the Senate better than any man or women who’s ever served in there, and I think I understand the House.”

He went on to criticize the “Neanderthal crowd” in the House for “stalling” on the legislation.

“Did you ever think we’d be fighting over, you know, 17, 18 years later to reauthorize this?” Biden asked.

One of the audience members asked about the reason House Republicans object to the current bill, which includes some provisions allowing for victims of domestic violence who are illegal immigrants to apply for visas. When asked if this may be a violation of the Constitution, Biden objected.

“Constitutional violation? Yeah, come on,” he scoffed.
