‘Wow!’ MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace Cracks Up Over Trump Official’s Spin On High Cost of Living
MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace couldn’t help but laugh at Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s spin on the economy as he defended President Donald Trump, who denied that costs are rising while chalking up criticism to a “con job.”
“Wow! This is what a $600 million Treasury Secretary gets you, politically,” Wallace said on Tuesday’s Deadline: White House before cutting to Bessent on Morning Joe the same day.
In his interview, Bessent was asked about Trump’s “con job” comment, and while he backed the president up, he also acknowledged an “affordability” crisis, claiming it was inherited from the previous administration.
“I believe even this morning you had two people come on and say, ‘Wow, I look at the price at the pump and I know costs are up.’ Well, gasoline is down. So that is a con job,” Bessent said.
“So you don’t believe that all the people who went to vote last Tuesday on the issue of affordability – ‘My rent is too high. I can’t afford to buy a house. Groceries are too expensive’ – do you think they’re just misperceiving what’s happening in their lives?” Willie Geist asked.
“I think that they’re – that we inherited an affordability crisis. We have slowed the price increases down, and they are going to continue to slow down. And that real working class wages will go up, and that that will address the affordability issue,” Bessent said.
Wallace laughed at the clip and Bessent’s explanation, calling him and the president “wildly out of touch.”
“Does anyone think Scott Bessent has ever pumped gas?” she said. “A wildly out of touch Donald Trump and cabinet trying and failing to gaslight the American people on the cost of living when it comes to his failure after 10 months in addressing the rising cost of living is where we start today.”
