Elon Musk, the billionaire ally of President-elect Donald Trump who will help helm the Department of Government Efficiency, issued a not-so-veiled threat to Republican lawmakers during a raging tweetstorm on Wednesday.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) has proposed a stopgap spending bill that has encountered significant pushback from some of his Republican colleagues in both the House and Senate.
But it might be Musk’s attacks that carry the most weight.
At 4:15 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, Musk tweeted that “This bill should not pass,” and he’s gotten noticeably more strident as the day has gone along.
In a raging tweetstorm over the last hour or so, Musk has called the bill a “scam,” a “criminal bill,” an “insane crime against the American people,” “an outrage,” “terrible,” and “madness.”
“The more I learn, the more obvious it becomes that this spending bill is a crime. It even includes funding for the worst illegal censorship operation in the entire government (GEC)!!” mused Musk in one post.
“We’re funding bioweapon labs in this bill!” he claimed in another.
At other points, Musk urged his followers to “Stop the steal of your tax dollars!” and “Call your elected representatives now,” because “They are trying to railroad this thing through today!” insisted that it “This is NOT democracy!” and warned that “They want to spend YOUR tax dollars on censoring YOU!!”
Most notably of all, Musk suggested that a vote in favor of the legislation would imperil lawmakers chances’ of keeping their jobs.
“Any member of the House or Senate who votes for this outrageous spending bill deserves to be voted out in 2 years!” he declared.
The proclamation is particularly notable given that Musk is the richest man in the world, has the ear of President-elect Donald Trump, and promised to use his PAC to “play a significant role” in GOP primaries.
