Extra Layer of Fencing Added Outside DNC After Protestors Breached Perimeter
Authorities have added another layer of fencing outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago after protestors broke through on Monday.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside to protest the ongoing war in Gaza. In anticipation of this, convention organizers established a perimeter outside the Chicago’s United Center. The fencing around that perimeter, however, was breached by protestors.
Ahead of the second day of the convention Tuesday, more fencing has been added.
“What we saw so far is a much different security footprint,” CNN’s Whitney Wild said during a live report from outside the venue. “So let me just walk you through what we’re seeing at the United Center. So, this is a more fortified view than what we’ve seen, [Brianna Keilar]. These non-scalable fences were here; but what we’re seeing now is these bolts that are fusing these more closely together because what we saw demonstrators do yesterday was they kind of got underneath this and wiggled it out of its spot here and then hoisted it over — and that’s how they were able to breach the perimeter of the DNC.”
In addition to fortifying the fencing, panels have been adding to the top to make them even taller. An entirely new layer of fencing was also added, bringing the total number of layers to three.
In a clip played by CNN, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said law enforcement expects more protests and more tactics to breach the perimeter.
“We do expect to see more protests, more demonstrator tactics,” he said at a press conference. “Again, we’re up to the challenge.”
