‘I Don’t Care About Palestine’: Jerry Seinfeld Dismisses Activist During Selfie Video
Comedian and actor Jerry Seinfeld dismissed an activist who said “free Palestine” in a selfie video posted on Sunday.
In a clip that was uploaded to Instagram by Subway DJ, a social media personality, he walked up to the comedian and actor and said, “Jerry, can I get a selfie?”
“Sure!” the 70-year-old replied.
The fan was not taking a picture but was instead filming with his phone’s front camera. He put up a peace sign and said, “Free Palestine.”
Seinfeld stared awkwardly into the camera for a moment before the fan asked him to repeat the phrase.
“Maybe?” he asked.
The comedian responded, “I don’t care about Palestine,” and walked away.
It was unclear exactly when the video was filmed, but it appears to have been at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, where on Friday night Saturday Night Live hosted a star-studded concert for its 50th anniversary. Seinfeld attended the event. Many of those who commented on the Instagram clip expressed anger at Seinfeld. Some of the top comments read: “What kind of artist says something like that? Empathy, humanization and equal human rights should be in the root of what they do as profession. I am in awe when I hear that kind of language from artists.”
“We don’t care about Seinfeld or anyone who supports genocide,” said another user. And another: “I don’t care about Jerry anymore then. As someone who loved Seinfeld, this is super disappointing.”
Seinfeld, who is Jewish, has made his support for Israel clear since the ongoing Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023.
In his own Instagram post on the matter, he wrote:
“I lived and worked on a Kibbutz in Israel when I was 16 and I have loved our Jewish homeland ever since. My heart is breaking from these attacks and atrocities. But we are also a very strong people in our hearts and minds. We believe in justice, freedom and equality. We survive and flourish no matter what. I will always stand with Israel and the Jewish people.
As People magazine reported last year, Seinfeld’s support for Israel led to many students walking out as he delivered a commencement speech at Duke University.
