‘It’s Going To Happen!’ Trump Boosts New Republican Speaker Bid From Outside Fraud Trial — Predicts Mike Johnson Win

Former President Donald Trump gave Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) the big outside-the-fraud-trial boost he needs for his bid to become the GOP’s next Speaker of the House, predicting a Johnson speakership is “going to happen!”

Trump was in court once again Wednesday for his trial in the fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James and presided over by Judge Arthur Engoron. Also in court — for a second day — was Trump’s former fixer-turned-star witness Michael Cohen.

Just before Trump entered the courtroom, reporters asked him to weigh in on the speaker race, which now features Johnson as the next nominee to brave the fractured GOP.

Trump rambled about a number of subjects, but wandered back to the speaker race eventually:

Tremendous congressman respected by everybody. I here it looks like it’s very good. And I had a negative comment about and everybody like him. He’s respected by all, and that’s something we need. And it looks like it’s going to happen!

So there’ll be a wonderful — and I put out a Truth today on him. And I did one last night, you saw that.

…And we think it’s going to be somebody really spectacular and maybe for many years to come will be very good. So we’re very happy about that.

(wanders off-topic and back)

Getting back to Congress we think Mike Johnson’s going to do really well. He’s popular, he’s smart and sharp. He’s going to be fantastic. I think he’s going to be a fantastic speaker. I believe that will happen. We’ll see what, you’ll let me know when I come, I’ll be out in a couple of hours.

Trump’s Truth Social post was billed as a “strong suggestion” to elect Johnson to the speakership — in which Trump wrote “I am not going to make an Endorsement in this race, because I COULD NEVER GO AGAINST ANY OF THESE FINE AND VERY TALENTED MEN, all of whom have supported me, in both mind and spirit, from the very beginning of our GREAT 2016 Victory.”
