Joe Manchin Accuses Ex-Colleagues of ‘Inhumanity’ and ‘Disrespect’ During Trump Speech
Former Democratic Senator Joe Manchin has accused his old colleagues of displaying “inhumanity” and “disrespect” during President Donald Trump’s address to Congress.
Reacting on NewsNation’s Cuomo to the various protests employed by Democrats during Trump’s speech – including the refusal of Democratic members of Congress to stand for a 13-year-old survivor of brain cancer – Manchin said:
My wife Gayle and I were watching this and we said, “Can you imagine if I were still there? I’d be the only one standing on that side if I were still caucusing with the Democrats.” And I said, “Where have we gone as a nation?” Only in Washington do you see this type of inhumanity, disrespect, no decorum whatsoever. This is not America, it’s not who we are, and extremes on both sides are wrong.
On the vocal opposition of Democrats to President Trump, Manchin argued, “He’s only been there 45 days. He is our president. He’s my president, he’s your president, he’s every Democrat’s president. Come on guys, get yourself in a posturing that I’m an American, I want my president to succeed, but be able to speak respectfully to truth to power.”
He concluded, “And if you’re against something, make sure you have a reason why you’re against it.”
Manchin served as U.S. senator from West Virginia for nearly 15 years before leaving the Democratic Party in 2024 and announcing he would not run for re-election.
Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was escorted out of the chamber after he repeatedly heckled Trump’s speech and refused to take his seat on Tuesday.
Several of Green’s Democratic colleagues condemned his “inappropriate” outburst, while ten Democrats voted with Republicans to censure Green on Thursday.
