NewsNation politics editor Chris Stirewalt mocked Rep. Al Green’s (D-TX) protest of President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday, remarking that “an elderly man waving a cane” was probably “not the look that the Democratic Party” wanted.
Green was escorted out of the chamber after he repeatedly heckled Trump’s speech and refused to take a seat on Tuesday evening.
Reacting to the incident on NewsNation’s On Balance, Stirewalt observed, “Al Green – the Democrat who stood up and tried to argue with Trump, tried to do the Marjorie Taylor Greene bit – is an elderly man waving a cane. This is not the look that the Democratic Party was trying to get, right? This is not the youth movement.”
Stirewalt also criticized Democrats for holding up small signs in the audience that read, “False” and “Musk Steals,” remarking, “I have no idea what Democrats thought they were doing. I have no idea. Holding up those signs.”
He questioned, “Can you imagine that you were a member of Congress, entrusted with the people’s work, and that you had little signs made up so that you would sit in the audience? And if you don’t wanna be there, don’t go. Don’t go. It would have been very powerful if there would have been a bunch of empty seats on the Democratic side, but to sit there and hold up your little thing.”
Stirewalt concluded, “And then Elizabeth Warren is clapping and Donald Trump is calling her Pocahontas, it’s all beneath the worth of a great nation.”
