A lawyer for Donald Trump was reportedly ridiculed Friday after citing a Breitbart article that attacked Justice Arthur Engoron’s court clerk.
Politico’s Erica Orden live tweeted the “lengthy exchange” between Engoron and attorney Christopher Kise.
“OK, that was a very lengthy exchange, primarily between Trump lawyer Chris Kise and Judge Engoron, about Engoron’s law clerk, in which Kise continued to allege ‘bias’ on the part of the clerk, prompted at least in part by a Breitbart story published yesterday,” Orden tweeted.
Orden continued, “Judge Engoron continued to defend his clerk & himself, and while he again asked the lawyers to refrain from referring to staff, he pointed out that he is fair game. You can say anything you want to about me. There’s no gag order about me. And that has been taken advantage of.”
“When the judge asked Kise which news outlet he was referring to and Kise replied that it was Breitbart, there were audible scoffs in the courtroom,” she continued.
Breitbart, which has long been associated with the far-right and was once run by Steve Bannon, reported Thursday that Engoron’s clerk, Allison Greenfield, “appears to have violated judicial rules preventing officers of the court from making excessive political donations.”
On Thursday, Engoron eviscerated Kise, accusing him of “misogyny,” and warning him not to refer to Greenfield again. Engoron then reportedly threatened to expand the original Trump gag order if his attorneys continued to mention court staff.
Trump was fined $10,000 last month for violating the order after Trump said Engoron was “a very partisan judge, with a person who’s very partisan sitting alongside of him, perhaps even much more partisan than he is.”
Engoron reaffirmed his ruling Thursday after Kise asked him to reconsider the fine. Trump has repeatedly taken to his Truth Social account to claim that he “did nothing wrong.”
