WATCH: Madison Cawthorn Shows Up at a Local School Hearing and Berates Board Members for Passing a Mask Mandate

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) is lashing out at a local school board over their decision to pass a mask mandate.

In comments before the Buncombe County, NC school board Thursday night, the first-term congressman raged over the decision to require unvaccinated students and staff to wear masks at school this fall.

“You have muzzled (parents’) voices just like you have muzzled our children,” Cawthorn said. “You passed this mask mandate without input from those who would hold you accountable because you knew it was wrong. You knew it would never withstand the scrutiny of the public. I’ve witnessed swampy backdoor tactics from corrupt bureaucrats in Washington D.C., but what you have done here today puts that all to shame.”

The Tar Heel state representative went on to slam the board members as “woke liberal government officials.”

“You have sacrificed the social, emotional, and psychological development of our children on the altar of wokeness,” Cawthorn told the board.

According to the latest case count from The New York Times, Buncombe County has a rolling average of 25 Covid cases per 100,000 people — making it a red zone for Covid transmission as defined by the CDC. Nonetheless, Cawthorn argued that a mask mandate “[flies] in the face of scientific reasoning” and would do more harm than good.

“Forcing our children to wear masks is nothing short of psychological child abuse,” Cawthorn said. “Period.”
