‘A Further Attack May Be Imminent’: British PM Theresa May Raises Terror Alert to Highest Level
British Prime Minister Theresa May announced Tuesday that she is raising the nation’s terror threat level to critical, the highest level, based on the early investigation into Monday’s suicide bombing in Manchester.
Calling another attack “imminent,” May said that it is possible that Salman Abedi, the named perpetrator of the Manchester attack, might not have acted alone.
“The work undertaken throughout the day revealed it is a possibility we cannot ignore, that there is a wider group of individuals linked to this attack,” May said.
The Prime Minister added that the preliminary findings warranted an increase in the terror threat to the highest level.
“It is now concluded on the basis of today’s investigations that the threat level should be increased for the time being from severe to critical,” May said. “This means that their assessment is not only that an attack remains highly likely, but that a further attack may be imminent.”
