Aaron Hernandez’s Lawyer Makes Deflate-Gate Joke During Murder Trial

When is a good time to make a joke about Deflate-Gate, which happened three weeks ago and is no longer something your friends will find funny? How about during a high-profile murder trial? Sure, that’s a good time.

The bad joke appeared yesterday during the trial of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez, who stands accused of murdering his friend Odin Lloyd in 2013. And it came from Hernandez’s lawyer, James Sultan, who was cross-examining a Massachusetts State Trooper about tire tracks left near the scene of the crime.

After asking him about his expertise in tire deflation devices, Sultan cracked: “Did you ever receive training in football deflation devices?”

After several seconds of awkward silence, the trooper answered: “No.”

CBS Boston reported today that Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh was not a fan of Ballghazi jokes, telling Sultan that “we are here on very serious business.” Sultan apologized for the worst Ballghazi joke ever (and we thought we saw all of them.)

You can view the livestream of the trial (and potentially more awkward ball jokes) here.
