ABC’s Rick Klein Once Almost Ran Over a Senator

Rick Klein is known as ABC’s political director, an ESPN sports commentator, and now, according to an interview he did with The Hill, the man who almost killed an American senator.

It was back in his salad days as a rookie Capitol Hill reporter, and portable hand-technology had just become a thing, and also Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) was incredibly old:

I was new to the Capitol Hill beat, and The Boston Globe had just bought me one of these newfangled BlackBerrys.

I finished covering an event Senate Democrats held on the steps of the Capitol, when I started fiddling with my device while heading up the stairs. I ran square into a frail Sen. Byrd, who teetered for a moment before I grabbed him by the shoulders and averted tragedy.

Byrd died in 2010 at the age of 92 from natural causes, and not, thankfully, at the hands of Klein.
