Al Franken Rips Trump, GOP In Final Floor Speech: ‘We’re Losing The War For Truth’
In his final Senate floor speech, resigning Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) took one final swipe at the GOP and President Donald Trump.
“As I leave the Senate, I have to admit that it feels like we’re losing the war for truth,” Franken said. “Maybe it’s already lost. If that’s what happens, then we have lost the ability to have the kinds of arguments that help build consensus.”
The two term senator was forced to resign on earlier this month after photo evidence emerged of Franken engaging in sexual misconduct back in 2006. Since then, several other women have come forward with their own allegations regarding the Minnesota Senator.
The outgoing Senator also slammed Republicans and Trump over the newly passed tax bill. Referencing the forgotten men and women Trump frequently invoked on the campaign trail, Franken called the legislation a “slap in the face” to that group.
“I guess the president forgot about them,” the Senator said.
He added, referencing his political mentor, the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, “The policies pursued by the Trump administration and congressional Republicans today could not stand in starker contrast to the values Paul championed. The values propelling the Republican agenda today are about consolidating political and economic power in the hands of corporations and the very wealthy.”
January 2 will be Frankens final day in the Senate.
