At Obamas’ Easter Service, Reverend Slams ‘Captains Of The Religious Right’

On Easter Sunday, President Obama and family attended service at St. John’s Church, where they have attended previous services.

The Episcopal church, located within walking distance of the White House, is led by Reverend Luis Leon, the Cuban-American pastor who delivered the sermon at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony in January. St John’s is known as a progressive, gay affirming church that blesses gay unions.

According to The Washington Post writer in attendance, Reverend Leon criticized conservatives in his sermon, saying it is time for conservatives to stop holding on to outdated stances in matters of race, gender equality, homosexuals, and immigrants. Leon stated:

“It drives me crazy when the captains of the religious right are always calling us back . . . for blacks to be back in the back of the bus . . . for women to be back in the kitchen . . . for immigrants to be back on their side of the border.”

Leon also stated:

“I hear all the time the expression ‘the good old days.’ Well, the good old days, we forget they have been good for some, but they weren’t good for everybody.”

Leon did not refer to any conservatives in particular, or specify which policies in particular he was referring to.

After the sermon, when asked by The Washington Post reporter to discuss his criticism of political conservatives, Leon declined.
