Barbara Walters Emerges from Retirement to Interview UCSB Shooter’s Father

It’s been just three weeks since Barbara Walters said goodbye with a star-studded retirement party on The View. But as many predicted, she could not stay away for long.
On Monday, ABC News announced that Walters will interview Peter Rodger, the father of 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, who went on a killing spree near the UC Santa Barbara campus that left six people dead before he killed himself. The interview will air during 20/20 on a to be determined date.
The elder Rodger is a filmmaker who has directed documentaries and recently served as a second unit director on The Hunger Games series. Ahead of the Walters interview, Rodger has declined to speak to the press, only releasing a short statement through a family friend.
“We are crying in pain for the victims and their families,” Rodger said in the statement. “It breaks our hearts on a level that we didn’t think possible. The feeling of knowing that it was our son’s actions that caused the tragedy can only be described as hell on earth.”
