Bill de Blasio: Calling Trump a Blowhard ‘Minimized the Danger’ of His Rhetoric
New York mayor Bill de Blasio Tuesday said he would no longer refer to Donald Trump as a “blowhard” because it minimizes the Republican frontrunner’s “dangerous” rhetoric.
“I realized that day — and I remember that interview well — that that was really the wrong term to use, and it minimized the danger of what he’s saying,” de Blasio told radio hosts Len Berman and Todd Schnitt. “And I quickly realized I had to change my language and start saying that what he’s doing is dangerous. And a lot of other voices have come to the same conclusion.”
“He has systematically affronted one group after another — women, Mexican-Americans, Muslims — and then he started to say things that are positively un-American,” de Blasio continued, referencing Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
“He’s now become dangerous, but I also think more and more people, including a lot of Republicans, are very, very concerned about what he’s saying, and more and more people are speaking out against it,” de Blasio added.
The New York mayor called Trump a “blowhard” in November, amid a growing feud between the two politicians. De Blasio previously said New York City would “actively resist” Trump’s immigration proposals. He also criticized the Republican frontrunner for “doing the bidding” of ISIS through his divisive rhetoric.
