Comedian Bill Maher is arguably one of the world’s most outspoken atheists. So there is nothing particularly surprising about this PSA he recently taped for the Openly Secular organization, a group that aims to eliminate discrimination of the non-religious by encouraging them to speak out about their non-beliefs.
In the video, taped on the set of his HBO show Real Time, Maher calls being secular “the most obvious decision a person could make in their life.”
“Do I want to make real-world policy decided on the basis on proven facts and the outer reaches of what humans have gotten to do in science?” Maher asks rhetorically in the ad. “Or do I want real world decisions made based on ancient myths, written by men who didn’t know what a germ or an atom was, or where the sun went at night? I pick choice A.”
Maher said he’s “OK” with people who don’t make the decision, but for the people who feel the same way he does, he added, “It’s really important that you say so.”
Author and fellow secularist Richard Dawkins shared the video on Twitter Tuesday:

Judging by the other names on Openly Secular’s YouTube channel, Maher is by far the highest-profile figure to make this declaration.
