Bill Maher: The Media ‘Fell Hard’ for Trump Exploiting Navy SEAL Ryan Owens’ Widow
Bill Maher tonight criticized the media––”I fucking hate” them, he said––for positive coverage of what was probably the most powerful moment of President Trump‘s address to Congress this week.
Carryn Owens got visibly emotional as Trump praised the sacrifice of her husband, Navy SEAL Ryan Owens, in Yemen, and she received a huge standing ovation. Most people were moved by the moment, but considering the circumstances of the Yemen raid and the president’s “they lost Ryan” remark, Maher and many others were critical of how exploitative the moment seemed.
Maher said the media “fell hard” for this and said far from being Trump’s best moment, it was actually his worst. Charlie Sykes found it moving in the moment, but admitted he woke up the next day thinking about the “incredible cynicism” of it.
Maher also wondered how Republicans would have reacted if Barack Obama had invited the family of Christopher Stevens to his State of the Union after Benghazi.
