Boston’s Longest-Serving Mayor Thomas Menino Dead at 71

Former Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino died Thursday at the age of 71, after a long battle with cancer.

Menino retired from the office just this year after conceding his health problems were making it difficult for him to focus on his job. He had been elected five consecutive times and, prior to that, served as an elected city councilor for five terms.

The ex-mayor had recently stopped chemotherapy treatments on his inoperable tumor and sought palliative care.
