BREAKING: Georgia Governor Will Veto Anti-LGBT ‘Religious Liberty’ Bill

“Money talks, bigotry walks” could be the moral of the story for opponents of discriminatory “religious liberty” bills, if Georgia’s Free Exercise Protection Act is any indication. On Monday morning, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal announced that, under pressure from a growing list of influential companies, he will veto the bill that landed on his desk, and even appeared to concede the discriminatory purpose of the bill:

I do not think that we have to discriminate against anyone to protect the faith-based community.

The veto follows a campaign that included pressure from the NFL, Disney, AMC, Delta Air Lines, Google, Home Depot, IBM, Marriott, Microsoft, Nordstrom, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, UPS and Verizon, among others. The legislation, which had already passed the Georgia House and Senate, would have extended broad protections to individuals who wish to discriminate against gay wedding ceremonies, or anything else they find objectionable on religious grounds.
