BREAKING: Rio Police Charge Ryan Lochte With False Robbery Report

USA Swimming teammate and Olympic champ Ryan Lochte has been officially charged by police in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with filing a false report of a robbery.

The embattled swimmer has already lost all of his primary endorsement deals reeling from the aftermath of an incident that took place in Rio during the recent Summer Olympic games. The 32-year-old swimmer lied to law enforcement — and then TODAY’s Billy Bush — about a Saturday night where he claimed he and three of his teammates were held up at gunpoint.

Earlier today Lochte was summoned to return to Rio to testify before Brazil’s justice department. Although he would not be required to testify, Lochte would forego his ability to negotiate a plea deal according to one Brazilian police detective.

According to the USA Today, “A police statement Thursday says Lochte will be informed in the United States so he can decide whether to introduce a defense in Brazil. The indictment will be sent to the International Olympic Committee’s ethics commission.”
