Senate Confirms Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court

The Senate has voted to approve President Trump‘s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Gorsuch’s nomination has been shrouded in controversy due to a year of political battles  since the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia. Gorsuch’s nomination was preceded by the doomed nomination of Merrick Garland. Throughout 2016, Senate Republicans refused to hold hearings for Garland on the grounds that Barack Obama‘s successor should be the one to decide who would take Scalia’s place.

Gorsuch’s nomination received major opposition from Senate Democrats, who launched a filibuster in order to prevent cloture and block the confirmation vote. Gorsuch’s nomination was virtually assured, however, after Republicans invoked the “nuclear option” to completely do away with judicial filibusters and approve Gorsuch through a majority vote.

Vice President Mike Pence presided over the end of the vote, where he said the final tally was 54 in favor, 45 against.
