Charles Barkley: The NBA is ‘The Worst It’s Ever Been’

TNT’s Inside The NBA is considered by many to be the gold standard of sports studio shows. To see why, one need look no further than the postgame edition on Thursday night, when Charles Barkley gave this candid take on the state of professional basketball.

“If you look at the NBA now, it’s the worst it’s ever been, in my opinion,” Barkley said.

The statement came as part of a discussion about big men in basketball. Barkley believes big men are being cast out of the game in favor of smaller players who are mediocre shooters. That’s a development he’s not particularly happy with.

And that led to Barkley sounding off on other developments he’s not thrilled with — like the trend of the best players flocking to the top few teams, like Kevin Durant signing with Golden State.

“(I)f you look at the big picture — and this ain’t no ‘old guy hating on the young guys’ — the NBA, to me, is the worst it’s ever been, top to bottom,” Barkley said. “We got one or two, three or four good teams, and the rest of these teams stink.”

Credit to TNT for allowing their personalities the freedom to say things like this. The network has invested a fortune in the league for decades. That they allow Barkley, and the rest of their studio show cast, to criticize it when warranted is refreshing for viewers.
