Chris Matthews Rips Senate For Inaction on Shutdown: ‘What Are They Doing Except D*cking Around?’
Two bills which could have ended the now 34-day long Federal government shutdown were brought to the Senate floor on Thursday. Neither reached the necessary 60 vote threshold. Neither really came close. This was assumed by many observers on Tuesday, when it was announced that the competing measures would hit the floor.
Hardball host Chris Matthews wanted to know: What on earth was the point.
“What do you make of this political gamesmanship that’s going on?” Matthews asked former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. “The public watched the Senate vote today on two measures that weren’t going to pass and everybody knew it. What are they doing except dicking around?”
Hickenlooper chuckled.
“Well, I can’t really use language like that,” he said.
“Dickering around,” Matthews replied.
“That’s better,” the ex-governor said.
Matthews went on to say that he believes there’s no end to the shutdown in sight — with neither President Donald Trump nor House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) ready to budge.
“I don’t think [Trump] can move without a wall of some kind,” Matthews said. “If it’s 50 or 20 feet, he’s got to put up something and I believe that speaker Pelosi…says that’s immoral. This sounds like a real iconic battle here.”
