CNN Anchor Describes Hillary Clinton’s Meeting With Press as an ‘Awkward First Date’
Today marks a special occasion in the 2016 campaign: former Secretary of State and Democratic party nominee Hillary Clinton met with the press — albeit briefly — this morning, and promised that she would face them for a Q&A “more formally” later on.
As I sarcastically wrote earlier on in this space, “BREAKING: Candidate Who Hates and Ignores the Press Will ‘More Formally’ Take Questions Today.” It’s been 275 days since Clinton last held a press conference opening herself up to questions from the press, and on this Labor Day it would seem as if the candidate is in more of a giving mood.
But when CNN played a clip from the on-board exchange between Clinton and the press corps this morning, anchor Christine Romans was blunt in her assessment.
Chatting with Brianna Keilar, Romans said “To me — correct me if I’m wrong — you’ve been on the campaign, you’ve been on the plane before with candidates — that felt like kind of an awkward first date to me.”
“Well I think there always is, perhaps, an element of that,” Keilar conceded. “There’s still a separation between the candidate and the press.”
But she noted that as a journalist or reported covering the elusive campaign of Hillary Clinton, “this is welcome… for the last sixteen months or so, [she] has traveled on a separate plane than the press,” a maneuver that Donald Trump takes advantage of as well.
