Cubs General Manager Theo Epstein Literally Stalked Random People While he was Red Sox GM
Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein made history in 2004, when at the age of 30, he helped guide the Boston Red Sox to their first title in 86 years.
Two years earlier, shortly after Epstein got the coveted job, the self-described introvert didn’t know how to handle it. So what did he do? He literally stalked random people on the street.
In a wide-ranging ESPN: The Magazine profile, the Cubs GM opened up to Wright Thompson about his voyeuristic first days with the Red Sox.
I was emotionally 16 when I was 28 and got the job. I was so introverted. I used to follow people home. I just like being anonymous so much that I would follow people home because they didn’t know who I was and I could watch them. I know how that sounds. I could not exist but observe.
The piece also recounts how things fell apart for Epstein in Boston, after the historic 2004 victory. Epstein solicited advice from New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick on how to handle success. Belichick said simply:
“You’re f***ed.”
