Customs and Border Protection Says Second Migrant Child Has Died in Their Custody This Month
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced in a press release on Christmas Day that another migrant child has died in their custody.
Immigration officials said that the child was an 8 year old boy from Guatemala who passed away early Tuesday after being transferred to the hospital on Monday. Washington Post reports that the boy was accompanied by his father when he was prescribed antibiotics and painkillers after showing “signs of potential illness.”
The boy returned to the hospital later in the day and reportedly died hours later after suffering from nausea and vomiting. The exact cause of death is not yet clear, though CBP said more details would be released in the near-future.
The boy’s passing marks the second time this month where a migrant child died while being detained by immigration officials. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has been under pressure lately over a 7 year old Guatemalan girl who died from dehydration and shock while under DHS’ supervision.
