There’s obviously a lot of gossip flying around this week over Brian Williams and his future at NBC after telling an incredibly false story about his time in Iraq twelve years ago. Tom Brokaw had to refute a New York Post Page Six gossip item claiming he’s furious with Williams and wants him gone; now there’s another gossip item flying around about who supposedly wants to take his chair.
The New York Daily News reports tonight that none other than Katie Couric is very interested in taking the Nightly News anchor chair. Couric, of course, used to work at NBC before leaving for CBS years ago.
An “insider” told the Daily News, “Brian is in deep trouble and this could be her chance. You don’t get to be as successful as Katie without being ruthless. Behind her is a line of bodies she needed to step on to get to the top.”
Yeah, this doesn’t exactly pass the smell test, and the piece even quotes another source saying this is a “complete fabrication.” But independently of that, Fox’s Howard Kurtz got this pretty clear reaction from someone close to Couric:
Source close to @katiecouric calls Daily News report that she wants Brian Williams' job "laughable and offensive."
