Trump Bashes Closest Rival: I Will File a Lawsuit If Ted Cruz Doesn’t Apologize
Somewhat unexpectedly, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump held a press conference Monday afternoon from Hanahan, South Carolina. At the event, Trump took questions from the gathered press corps and used the opportunity to bash his closest competitor: Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
“He’s an unstable person, in my opinion,” said Trump. When pressed about whether Senator Cruz was too unstable to be President, Trump considered for a moment, before settling on, “Yes, in my opinion.”
“He doesn’t have the right to serve as President — he was born in Canada!” Trump opined, and revealed that he would file a lawsuit against Ted Cruz if the Texas Senator doesn’t apologize for claims made in recent campaign ads.
Last week the Cruz campaign released an ad aimed at attacking Trump’s character, accusing the frontrunner as taking part “in a pattern of sleaze stretching back decades.” The ads have begun running in the state of South Carolina since late last week.
“He’s a liar,” Trump said Monday simply.
The presser comes just five before state-wide primary voting takes place. The most recent polling data from Real Clear Politics indicates that Trump is holding onto a 20-point lead over Cruz.
The South Carolina Primary is the first voting exercise since Trump decisively won the New Hampshire Primary early last week. Prior to that, the real estate mogul finished a disappointing second place in the Iowa Caucus behind Cruz. As the press conference was going on, the Trump campaign issued a formal press release, saying in part:
[Ted Cruz] is the single biggest liar I’ve ever come across, in politics or otherwise, and I have seen some of the best of them. His statements are totally untrue and completely outrageous. It is hard to believe a person who proclaims to be a Christian could be so dishonest and lie so much.
