False Rumor Of President Obama’s Death Spreads On Twitter

The trending topic “RIP Obama” surfaced and began to trend worldwide today, despite absolutely no evidence that President Obama’s life was in danger at all, or that anything had gone wrong to suggest his life was in danger. Our sister site Gossip Cop first noticed the trend today.

The website WhatTheTrend.com describes the “RIP Obama” topic as meaning “Really Impressive President,” though where that came from is anybody’s guess. Currently, it appears that most of the tweets causing it to continue trending are people shocked and appalled that it became a trending topic to begin with.

This happens often on Twitter with celebrities like Justin Bieber and Charlie Sheen, but this is the first major death hoax on Twitter involving a politician, let alone the leader of the free world.
