A Ferguson cop is being accused of a truly disgusting act: letting a police dog urinate on a memorial set up by residents for Michael Brown. Mother Jones reporter Mark Follman says this was relayed to him by several different local officials.
In his report, Follman recounts how tensions flared in Ferguson over the past few weeks. He specifically highlighted certain police actions that got residents pretty pissed off on the day of Brown’s shooting.
The memorial was set up that same day at night, in the street, where Brown’s body had been. Residents claim the police showed up and got rather intense with them, keeping any non-police vehicles out of the immediate area. The police cars even allegedly ran over the candles and flowers mourners had set up.
But the real indignity, some say, is what they witnessed one officer in particular doing:
An officer on the street let the dog he was controlling urinate on the memorial site.
The incident was related to me separately by three state and local officials who worked with the community in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. One confirmed that he interviewed an eyewitness, a young woman, and pressed her on what exactly she saw. “She said that the officer just let the dog pee on it,” that official told me. “She was very distraught about it.” The identity of the officer who handled the dog and the agency he was with remain unclear.
