Fox’s Outnumbered Hosts Slam Facebook for Bias, ‘Unethical’ Lack of Transparency
Fox’s Outnumbered hosts roundly slammed Facebook for not fessing up to a bias in curating its trending news feeds — although they dismissed the idea that a possible Senate inquiry into the social media site was a good idea.
Wednesday’s guest Hashtag One Lucky Guy Tony Sayegh said that Facebook users considered the site a news source and so they had a reasonable expectation of objectivity. If Facebook exercised editorial judgment as a practice, he said, the site should be upfront about that.
“There is probably a bias someplace somewhere. if they are censoring trending topics that show conservative issues and conservative news isn’t on that, i think that is highly unethical,” Meghan McCain said.
Dagen McDowell suggested that the site should be forthcoming about its political leanings and the methods it used to determine what news stories users see. “But when it comes to the government intervening in how private companies operate,” she said, “because I complain about what the Obama administration has done repeatedly. So my general stance is: ‘Butt out.'”
“Now that the public knows what is going on, I think Facebook can step up and stand up without having senate hearings,” she added.
