Weight Loss Company to Precious Star: The Only Way You Win An Oscar Is By Shedding Pounds

The argument that Gabourey Sidibe, the 26-year old star of Precious, is “too fat” to win an Oscar is so ridiculous it barely warrants a mention: Howard Stern can mock her all he wants, but as Marlon Brando proved, you’re never too big to be critically acclaimed. Yet AcaiSupply.com, a company trying to grab some attention for their weight loss system, wrote Sidibe’s to tell her obesity problem is going to keep her from ever taking home a golden statue.

“The only way you can reach your goal of someday winning that Oscar is by being active, fit, and most of all, healthy!” the CEO of Acai Suppy wrote to Sidibe offering her a one year supply of the drug, along with one year’s supply of their supplement, according to TMZ.

Now, the question of whether Sibide’s weight warrants a discussion on America’s obesity problem is besides the point. The real question is: What does size have to do with – not box-office success – but critical acclaim? How big was Mo’Nique this year when she won Best Supporting for the same film? Or when Jennifer Hudson took the prize for Dreamgirls over skinnier counterparts? Kathy Bates in Misery? If anything, critical acclaim comes from shunning the Hollywood standards of glitz and airbrushing and applauding actual talent, of which Sidibe has plenty.
