GOP Launches Campaign Aimed at Wooing Black and Urban Voters
In an attempt to broaden its base, the Republican National Committee has launched a month-long campaign aimed at wooing urban and black voters in Ohio.
Called, “#CommittedToCommunity: Engage, Empower, Uplift,” the Associated Press reports that the campaign will be four-months long and set to end after the first Republican debate on August 6 in Columbus. Ohio was also selected ahead of the Republican National Convention, to be held in Cleveland in 2016. If the initial campaign proves successful, they aim to replicate it in other states.
“People are talking about the convention and the debates,” RNC communications director Orlando Watson said. “People know about the Republicans coming to town. If nothing else, black voters are curious: ‘What are they talking about?'”
Republicans plan to buy radio ads on hip-hop stations and mobile ads targeting millennials with an emphasis on “job creation, education opportunities, strong families and safe communities.” The RNC is also scheduling faith-based events, concerts, and forums in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.
