Gunman Spotted at American University, Campus on Lockdown (UPDATED)

American University in Washington, DC is currently in lockdown after reports of a gunman on campus. AU Public Safety and DC police are currently on the scene.

These are the two tweets sent out by AU Public Safety thus far.

President Obama was at American University for his interview with Chris Matthews last week, but he was off-campus, at the Greenberg Theatre.

UPDATE @ 8:33: Campus newspaper The Eagle now has details on the nature of the threat.

MPD received a call about a shooter on campus at 7:24 p.m., according to the department. At 8:06 p.m., Public Safety and MPD arrived on campus to investigate, according to a second AU Alert.

There are two helicopters currently circling the campus.

One AU student snapped a picture of the scene at the campus library.

UPDATE @ 8:45: This is a photo AU Public Safety tweeted out earlier in the evening.

UPDATE @ 9:16: Another AU student tweeted out a picture of what appears to be police cars at the Berkshire Apartments, just down the street from the main AU campus.

UPDATE @ 9:20: New details tweeted out by campus TV station ATV.

UPDATE @ 9:23: And the lockdown has now been lifted.
