How did Usain Bolt Reportedly Help Cause the Evacuation at JFK Airport?
It was an electrifying performance. Usain Bolt, still the fastest man alive, ran 100m in 9.86 seconds Sunday night on his way to an unprecedented third straight Gold medal in the event.
Fans watching on television at JFK Airport’s Terminal 8 were fired up by Bolt’s remarkable sprint. So much so, in fact, that according to a report from NBC News, their cheering was mistaken for gunfire.
As a result, authorities evacuated travelers from Terminal 8. Forty-five minutes later, another erroneous report of gunfire was made in Terminal 1. That area too was cleared of travelers.
People were allowed to return to both terminals shortly after midnight, approximately two and a half hours after Terminal 8 was cleared.
